Tips and Tricks

TURKEY HUNTING:

TIP #1: Scout as hard as you hunt.  By knowing the birds in the areas you hunt, and their habits, its helps in making decisions during your hunt if you can pull from knowledge you acquired during scouting trips.

TIP #2: When the wind is blowing hard, try to approach fields and strut zones with the wind at your back.  When the wind is howling, gobblers will strut with the wind at their back so they are not fighting the wind when their tail fan is up.  if you approach from the same way, it decreases the chance of getting spotted.

TIP #3: When setting up around fields, try to set up around waterways, natural low spots, or ditches that run through the fields.  Many times, turkeys will follow these wrinkles in terrain when strutting and feeding.

TIP #4: Always try to set up with the sun at you back in the mornings or evenings, or if its mid-day, in the shadow of a tree.  This will make it easier for you to see approaching gobblers, make it harder for them to see you, and keep you from getting glare off of you gun or other gear.

TIP #5: Don’t be afraid to use an owl call in the middle of the day to locate gobblers.   The purpose of a locator call is to make a bird shock gobble; and if he has been hearing crows all morning, he may gobble at the owl call because its something he isn’t used to hearing.
